Many people believe that following Mother Nature's methods is best. While I don't agree completely with this thought, I do agree there are many natural products that are useful, especially in the control of some honey bee pests. I have a favorite book I use from time to time that has a self-explanatory title, Handbook of Plants with Pest-Control Properties. While it was published 1 1 years ago, it is still an excellent reference for those who want to study natural control, and I thought it timely to review its contents.

Honey has a long history of therapeutic properties for multiple diseases, including inflammation and oxidative stress. This review aimed to provide a better understanding and renewed interest in the potential role of honey in obesity control, obesity-related diseases treatment and weight management, with specific reference to its components and the effect of honey overall. There is compelling evidence that honey possesses the desired properties for this purpose, as seen in the in vitro, in silico, in vivo and clinical analyses discussed in this review. This review also highlights the components potentially responsible for the health benefits of honey. Honey and its components reduce blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism by reducing triglycerides, and reduce total cholesterol and LDL levels while increasing HDL levels that prevent excessive weight gain and reduce the risk of obesity and its complications. Further controlled studies are necessary to validate the role of honey in the management of obesity, both as a preventive and as a therapeutic agent.

Background: and purpose: In spite of several trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, honey is not considered as a viable candidate for the prophylaxis and treatment of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in the practice guidelines for supportive care. The purpose of this study was to analyse the value of honey in this treatment situation based on randomized trials acknowledging the fact that manuka honey which is used in some trials distinguishes itself from other honey due to the presence of methylglyoxal. Methods: On the basis of a literature search, we identified and analysed 17 randomized trials on the topic. Participants in these trials received radiotherapy or a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for head and neck cancer. Results: Studies using manuka honey found little rationale for the medicinal use of honey (n = 4) in this field, whereas trials using conventional honey presented data on its usefulness (n = 13). Thus, the type of honey may explain the divergent results of trials in this area. Conclusion: Conventional honey is likely to be effective in the prophylaxis and treatment of radiation- and chemoradiation-induced oral mucositis.

Background& Objective: The use of natural antioxidants is a new approach in controlling diabetes. In this study, the effect of natural honey (a powerful antioxidant) was compared with metformin (a prevalent drug used for diabetes) on histological changes of pancreas in diabetic rats.Materials& Methods: 30 male rats, weighting 180-220 gram were randomly divided into six groups including C: non diabetic rats receiving distilled water (0.5 ml), CH: non diabetic rats receiving honey (1g/kg b.w), CD: diabetic rats administered with distilled water (0.5 ml), D.H: honey treated diabetic rats (1g/kg b.w),?DM: Metformin administrated-diabetic rats (100 mg/kg), and DMH: Metformin + honey-co-treated diabetic animals.Diabetes was induced by a single dose of Streptozotcin (65 mg/kg i.p). The animals were treated by oral gavage daily for a month. After treatment, the pancreatic tissues of the animals were excised, prepared, and stained with H & E method. Results:?The results showed that the diameter and the number of islands of the pancreas in diabetic control rats have more significant decrease (p<0.001) than non-diabetic control rats. Diameter of the islands in DMH group had significant increase compared with DH and DM groups (p<0.05). Moreover, atrophy and destruction of the islet cells and the nucleus were obs...

We faced improvement of these complications in treatment groups. Conclusion:?Natural honey can have healing effect on the pancreas tissue of diabetic rats. Due to the antioxidant properties of honey, combination of honey and metformin can have restorative effect on pancreatic tissue repair in diabetic rats.

Burns cause many significant changes in metabolism and inflammatory reactions, leading to poor regeneration in animals and humans. A list of medicines to treat burns is available in the market. But due to the high cost of these medicines, these are unaffordable, especially for farmers of middle-class families of Africa and Asia. Therefore, a low-cost complementary treatment has always been a topic of many researchers, and there is a dire need of time for the welfare of animals to save them. The current study was planned to scrutinize the therapeutic effects of Manuka honey and Nitrofurazone ointments on full-thickness burn wounds in the rabbit model. The healing efficacy was performed through wound contraction rate, hematological analysis, the thickness of dermis and epidermis, and collagen content percentage. Histopathology was performed after taking biopsy samples at the end of the research. Based on statistical analysis using wound healing time (days, D), the combination (MO + NT) resulted in a shorter period (27 D ± 1) than the average healing time of controlled (36 ± 2), Manuka ointment (31.33 D ± 1.52), and Nitrofurazone ointment (32 ± 1). A significant decrease in the count of red blood cell (RBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) in all treatments was noticed mainly in MO + NT. Furthermore, burns induced a significant difference ( p < 0.05) in the white blood cells (WBCs) count levels in the MO-treated group. While the level of platelets (PLTs) was not significantly different from the healthy control group. Histopathological assessment (epithelialization, fibrosis, and angiogenesis) of skin showed burn healing to be better in MO and MO + NT groups. In conclusion, the composite of Manuka honey with Nitrofurazone led to the faster recovery than other treatments.

Honey maturity is an important factor in evaluating the quality of honey. We established a method for the identification of natural mature acacia honey with eighteen physicochemical parameters combined with chemometric analysis. The analysis of variance showed significant differences between mature and immature acacia honey in physicochemical parameters. The principal component analysis explained 82.64% of the variance among samples, and indicated that total phenolic content, total protein content, and total sugar(glucose, fructose, sucrose)were the major variables. The cluster analysis and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis demonstrated that samples were grouped in relation to the maturity coinciding with the results of the principal component analysis.Meanwhile, the 35 test samples were classified with 100% accuracy with the method of multi-physicochemical parameters combined with chemometric analysis. All the results presented above proved the possibility of identifying mature acacia honey and immature acacia honey according to the chemometric analysis based on the multi-physicochemical parameters.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) in 200 honeys and 63 bee pollens distributed in South Korea were investigated to evaluate their concentration and safety by simultaneous LC-MS/MS analysis. The risk of PAs' intake was also evaluated. The average PA concentration in honey and bee pollen was lower in products produced in South Korea (honey, 4.2 mu g/kg; bee pollen, 306.4 mu g/kg) than in ones produced outside South Korea (honey, 24.3 mu g/kg; bee pollen, 327.5 mu g/kg). PA concentration in bee pollen was about 30 times higher than in honey. It was thought that bee pollen had a significant effect on PA concentration in honey, as honey and bee pollen showed similar PA detection tendencies. The daily exposure to PAs from honey intake was 0.0003 mu g/kg body weight (b.w.) per day for all ages, and the safe margin of exposure (MOE) calculated based on BMDL10 237 mu g/kg b.w./day was 722 759, which was a safe level (MOE 10 000 or more).

In this study HPLC technique and classical spectrophotometric Winkler approach for determination of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in natural honey were compared with respect to recovery, precision and sensitivity (detection and quantification limits). HMF content was determined in 15 types of natural honey using both investigated methods. Six honey samples were purchased in retail outlets in the Gdansk-Gdynia-Sopot "Tri-City" area, and 9 samples were obtained directly from six beekeepers. Significance of differences between HMF levels in honeys determined by both methods was estimated with the use of the Student's t-test (α = 0.05). In each analyzed honey sample, HMF content determined by the Winkler method was statistically significantly higher than that obtained by the HPLC technique. The above result can most likely be attributed to the presence of aldehydes other than HMF, furan derivatives, that undergo a color reaction with p-toluidine and barbituric acid in honey. HMF content in the analyzed samples determined by HPLC was in the range 180.12-4979.63 μg/100 g of honey. In three samples HMF level exceeded the allowable limit and was above 4000 μg/100 g of honey. Owing to higher sensitivity and repeatability of HPLC, non-specificity of the Winkler approach, and carcinogenicity of p-toluidine used in the determination process, HPLC seems to be a superior method for determination of HMF content in natural honey.
